Isaac Levitan, “Alps / Snow” (1897). Representative work, not necessarily on view.

Fragile Art: Pastel from the funds of the graphic art of the XVIII – early XX centuries gathers around 200 pastel works drawn from the Tretyakov Gallery’s collection of graphic art, spanning the 18th century to the early 20th. Pastel is powdered pigment pressed into a stick and laid straight onto paper. It gives a velvety, matte surface, and it is easily smudged, which is why such sheets are kept away from light and handled with care. Seeing so many of them together is a rare chance.

The story begins in the 18th century with the portraits of Erikssen, where the soft texture of the medium suits the faces of the period. From there the show moves through the 19th century and into the years around 1900, when Russian painters took pastel up as a medium in its own right rather than a quick sketching tool.

Three names carry that later chapter. Levitan brings the dusky light and open skies of the Russian landscape, a subject the exhibition presents through the pastel’s powdery softness. Serov is represented by portraiture, where a few confident strokes of chalk can fix a likeness. Vrubel adds the more restless, jewel-toned side of the medium. Alongside them hang sheets by the artists of the World of Art circle, the group that shaped Russian taste at the turn of the century.

Taken together, the works trace how one delicate technique passed from the salon portrait to the experiments of the Silver Age. For anyone curious about Russian drawing beyond oil painting, the show offers a close look at a side of the national collection that seldom leaves the storeroom.
